BIM Modelling Solutions

BIM Modelling software

BIM is not a software product, but a process.

The process of BIM means that data needs to be coralated by many different software packages and not as the popular misconception that everything is stored in one model file. 3D modelling software packages are not as efficient at holding and retrieving speciifc infomation data as say an MDB or SQL Database. They are also are not as efficient at carrying out functions and formulas as a spreadsheet. Oakley CAD Services understand the process required, the limitations of the software and as Autodesk developers we know how to extract the data that you need from your BIM model to the appropraite file format that you need.

In order to aid the Architectural design process Autodesk have developed specific BIM software aimed at meeting the needs of designers. A brief overview of the software provided by Autodesk that we can aid in the implementation of are as follows:-

Autodesk Revit

Autodesk Revit is BIM software, which allows the user to design with parametric modelling and drafting elements. Building Information Modelling is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) paradigm that allows for intelligent, 3D and parametric object-based design. In this way, Revit provides full bi-directional associativity. A change anywhere is a change everywhere, instantly, with no user interaction to manually update any view. A BIM model may contain the building's full life cycle, from concept to construction to decommission.

AutoCAD Architecture (Formerly ADT)

Whilst not specifically marketed as a BIM solution by Autodesk, the AutoCAD Architecture software can be a powerful tool within any BIM process. The lack of parametric design and full bi-directional associativity are seen as a flaw by some but for others are seen as an advantage.

AutoCAD Architecture is a very powerful modelling tool and in this respect probably has the edge over Revit. Its property sets can be used to add Meta data to any object type and it is especially useful for leveraging the training and skills of users who are already experienced in AutoCAD.

By enabling existing detailed 3D design models to be aggregated and shared for review between all projects stakeholders, Autodesk Navisworks solutions are at the heart of your building information modelling (BIM) workflow.

Autodesk Navisworks software applications combine design data created by applications—such as the AutoCAD and Revit® families of products—with geometry and information from other design tools that can be reviewed in real-time as an entire 3D project, in multiple file formats and regardless of file size. Navisworks software products provides stakeholders a whole project view for improving design decision making, construction documentation, and performance prediction and planning, straight through to management and operation of the facility.
